our story

meet mike

Rudimental founder and chief matcha maker. Husband, dog dad (2), professional drummer, photographer, videographer and a matcha obsessive.

My passion, purpose and the thing that fills me with joy is educating.

I don't want to "sell" you matcha. I want to teach you about it.

I want to show you all of the ways this incredible green powder can improve your health both mentally and physically.

I want to open your eyes to how adding this one, simple daily ritual to your morning can jump start the rest of your day.

If you really want to know..

Here's a bit more of the story behind the name and my personal journey from a matcha hater to matcha obsessive!

  • WHAT'S WITH THAT NAME?

As a professional drummer, the word rudiment has been a massive part of my vocabulary since I was five. I use the word to describe fundamental patterns that allow us to express ourselves on our instrument.

I chose Rudimental as our company's root word because it also means imperfect and unfinished. THAT perfectly describes my relationship with matcha.

Every morning I go downstairs at about 4:30 am (yes, I'm one of those annoying early risers, lol) and make my first bowl of matcha. I aim to make it better than the day before.

I might try a bit less water than yesterday or a different brand of oat milk than last week. It's not the matcha that's imperfect. It's the process.

Every day is a chance to make the best matcha I've ever had, and I am absolutely addicted to that pursuit!

  • MIKE'S MATCHA START

If you've ever said, "I'm not into matcha" then you and I have something in common. I've been obsessed with tea since my touring days (imagine RageAgainstTheKornTones). Still, every time I tried matcha I couldn't stand it. It was bitter, chalky, and downright gross.

Little did I know I wasn't actually drinking matcha. Instead, I was drinking cheap powdered green tea, usually burned by boiling water and rarely sifted.

Then I tried ceremonial grade matcha prepared by someone who truly cared about the ritual at a small cafe in Carmel, CA. It was a light bulb moment where I literally said, "OH, so this is what everyone is talking about."

After that, I became obsessed with matcha and have been doing everything I can to spread the word!
