Honoring the Japanese matcha culture, we define some of the ancient terms used throughout our site.

  • CHASAKU

    A traditional Japanese tea scoop used for measuring and pouring Matcha powder in the Chawan.

  • CHASEN

    A traditional Japanese whisk made from Bamboo and used to mix the Matcha powder and water to make your Matcha tea.

  • CHAWAN

    A bowl or tea cup used for preparing and drinking Matcha tea. There are many types of Chawan used in Japanese tea ceremony.

  • CULTIVAR

    All Japanese green tea are produced by the same tea tree (camellia sinensis var. sinensis) but there are hundreds of different cultivated varieties of plant or cultivars. The flavor profile of each cultivar is distinctly different.

  • FURUI

    A sifter. The Furui is used ensure a smooth, clump free matcha. Matcha is so finely ground that it tends to clump due to static charge and exposure to moisture!

  • KUSENAOSHI

    A ceramic holder used to hold your Chasen (whisk). The shape of the holder helps your whisk to maintain its shape and last longer.

  • MATCHA

    A finely ground powder made from green tea leaves that have been steamed then dried.
